Spring Fling 2009 - dates for your diary
Next year's Spring Fling open studio event will take place in selected artist and makers' studios across Dumfries and Galloway from Saturday 23 - Monday 25 May 2009. Details of 2009's event will become available in early 2009.
Spring Fling 2008 took place across Dumfries & Galloway from Saturday 24 to Monday 26 May 2008.
Spring Fling offers the exciting opportunity to meet with South West Scotland’s talented artists and makers in their individual creative space for three days only. For the 6th year, Spring Fling, Scotland’s premiere annual art and craft open studio event, attracted visitors from across the UK and much further a field. Studio hot spots reported in excess of 600 visitors over the three days with one or two receiving over 1,000.
Whether tucked away in a farm steading or set up in a dedicated studio, participating artists and makers enjoyed welcoming visitors, treating them to a unique opportunity to meet with them in their individual creative spaces, watch them at work and even have a go themselves. Meeting a maker of a work and finding out how and where it was made is a special privilege and also great fun. Whether you are looking for that special gift, are curious to watch an artist at work, even have a go yourself, or simply fancy a great day out Spring Fling is for you. Not only will you be discovering the region’s arts and crafts, you’ll also be enjoying stunning locations across the breadth of the beautiful region.
Information about 2008's 87 participants is still available for you to browse. Several studios are open throughout the year or you can arrange to visit by making an appointment. Spring Fling Open Studios Association Dumfries and Galloway Council’s Arts Team have led the inception and development of Spring Fling since 2003. The Spring Fling Open Studios Association was established in 2007 and has recently been constituted. It has been awarded a three year funding package (2008-2010) by Dumfries and Galloway Council, which will also be supporting the work of the Association through its Cultural Services Arts Team. It is the Association’s aim that through the event and related initiatives and projects it will develop and strengthen engagement in the arts and culture for people from a wide diversity of backgrounds, including hard to reach groups who may not readily access art galleries and arts events, but who through interaction with individual artists and makers may become regular arts attenders in the future. We want the isolated rural settlements within which the majority of studios across the region are located to benefit from the sense of occasion, excitement and local pride that Spring Fling generates, as well as from the local economic impact that Spring Fling generates. Through Spring Fling the Association aims to help our local communities to remain sustainable and at the same time to promote awareness of and respect for our region’s natural environment.
