Kings of Dumfries looking to Showcase work of local artists
With the recent refurbishment of Kings in Dumfries town centre, there has also been a shift of focus and adoption of a new style. Realising the lack of top quality coffee in the area, as well as understanding that the coffee scene is closely tied with the art and music culture these days, Kings now aims to fill the gap in Dumfries.
Attempting a modern take on rustic style, many locally sourced and natural materials have been used in the refurbishment, providing a hip but inclusive atmosphere. Kings also looks to hold events such as coffee cuppings, live music performances, wine & cheese evenings, and many more - which hopefully will in turn develop a sense of community among customers and help stimulate the creative juices.
With all the new developments - which include using new coffee roasters, Edinburgh based Artisan Roast, as well as a new menu of exciting ciabattas, sandwiches etc. - there is also now the opportunity to showcase some of the local artistic talent using the walls as a gallery space.
Kings will be holding an exclusive launch party in the evening of Friday 27th August, and would love to extend an invitation for submissions and to hold a private viewing as part of the launch party celebrations on the 27th. One artist being selected to exhibit for the first month, but this will be an ongoing and frequently changing opportunity to exhibit so all submissions welcome.
For more information or to submit work, please contact Bek Freeman at bekjfreeman@gmail.com or Mark Smith at mark@kingsonline.co.uk

Conserving Ecologies: Craft and Biodiversity
Craftmakers Exhibition Opportunity, Deadline 13th September 2010
Celebrating the diversity of Scotland's contemporary craftmakers and our natural environment, this exhibition will explore how our choices impact on the world we live in.
craftscotland in partnership with Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh are presenting a new exhibition to be held at the John Hope Gateway, Royal Botanic Gardens Edinburgh from December 2010 - March 2011.
This exhibition aims to highlight the issues surrounding the significance in preserving our biodiversity through the unique presentation of Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh's own research and a selection of contemporary Scottish craft.
Biodiversity is the variation of life, from diversity within species to the vast array of distinct species and habitats. Biodiversity is often used as a measure of the health of ecosystems. The biodiversity found on Earth today consists of many millions of distinct biological species
Scotland is unique in its own Biodiversity, which is recognised by The Scottish Government who place Scottish biodiversity as a key priority. The Scottish Biodiversity Strategy aims to conserve and enhance biodiversity for the health, enjoyment and wellbeing of the people of Scotland.
Scotland hosts a vibrant 'craft ecology' of over 3000 makers contributing to Scotland's rich craft Biodiversity. Craftworking presents audiences with a viable, sustainable and ethical alternative to mass produced stock, preserving traditional skills, whilst developing them through contemporary and creative processes. It is this choice and crafts contribution to enriching the Scottish creative landscape which we aim to celebrate through this exhibition. This will be presented alongside the physical impact that humans are having on their natural environment.
We are looking for makers expressions of interest in being involved in this exhibition. Work will be displayed within the John Hope Gateway gallery space, as well as being available for purchase within the John Hope Gateway shop and several opportunities will be available for makers to lead workshops.
Please register your interest by the 13th September 2010, by emailing rebecca@craftscotland.org for more information.

Free Artwork Project at Edinburgh Art Festival 2010
A series of site specific Art searches engaging audience, art and space. Curated by Heather Tweed. A serendipitous Art project will enable anyone lucky enough to find a hidden piece of Artwork in Edinburgh during the Edinburgh Art Festival, to report their find and keep the piece. Twenty-eight small artworks secreted at psychogeographically selected sites across Edinburgh City centre within walking distance of The Heart Of Midlothian will be available for anyone to find and keep.
Eight specially selected Artists from a National call have contributed to the project, Lost Not Found:Abscission which is currently self funded by Artist and curator, Heather Tweed. Three of the Artworks are created using real gold leaf and although the Artists are all aware that their work may go astray they are all keen for residents and visitors to the City to be on the lookout for the special packages that bear the legend 'FOUND. Congratulations you have discovered a piece of artwork'. Finders are then requested to follow the instructions on the packaging to participate in the project and keep the artwork. As each Artwork is found and reported, it will be documented and details of location added to an online map and social networking sites will be utilised to spread the word.
The project started informally in Edinburgh during the Fringe last year and continues to develop in slightly differing forms, including a version at Figment in New York during June this year. Artworks include sculpture, photography and real gold leaf collage. There are no clues to the whereabouts of the Artworks, this is a game of luck, chance and good fortune.
Selected Artists :Millie Burton, Peter Crush, Vicki Fleck, Carl Gent , Alison McKenzie, Christopher Parks, Charlotte Pratley , Sarah Tulloch, Heather Tweed.

National Crafts month 2011
Craft and Design magazine, are now committed to promoting a national crafts month in 2011 and are proposing that the first week of May should be national ceramics week. Anyone who wants to can be involved by simply doing something in that week - open studios, ceramic trails, exhibitions, demonstration days, workshops - anything ceramics based to raise pubic awareness of studio ceramics during that week.
As well as informing the public it might also create better networks between potters in particular areas to help facilitate future initiatives.
There's no need for external funding - no "fat cat" co-ordinator - just a set date when every potter in the UK can do their own thing and claim a week for ceramics just by taking part.
Galleries could be involved, promoting their own ceramics exhibitions. Schools and colleges could also take part but that's up to them. All we can do as individual makers is promote ourselves. Multiply this by a few thousand throughout the UK and we're making a major statement about ceramics in the community. We don't have to ask permission or lobby any government departments for recognition we just have to do it - all at the same time.
Craft and Design magazine have just put a contact link on their home page www.craftanddesign.net - contact to express an interest - but hope to have an area soon where everyone can see who's taking part. At that time all you have to do is tell them what you're going to do during that week and they'll list it for free.

A NIGHT OUT AT THOMAS TOSH WITH LOCAL ARTISTS
TUE 24TH SEPTEMBER
Three locally-based artists will be centre stage for a special late night opening of Thomas Tosh in Thornhill this coming Tuesday (24th September). Linda Woodfield, Hannah McAndrew and Phil McMenemy are the trio behind the latest exhibition at Thomas Tosh: Camera, Clay & Cloth. Each of the artists works in a different medium. Phil is the photographer, Hannah is the ceramist and Linda works with textiles.
And the artists will be on hand to chat about the exhibition at Tuesday's evening event. Hannah McAndrew's pottery has a huge amount of fans. She uses the ancient art of slipware to create beautiful decorated pieces. Linda Woodfield's textiles are exuberant and intricate. Linda has a great eye for colour, respect for tradition, and a readiness to work with new fabrics. And Phil McMenemy's photography distils Dumfries and Galloway to its most beautiful. His images vividly demonstrate his love of the natural world. The event will last from 7pm-9pm and is free, as is entry to the exhibition Camera, Clay & Cloth that runs until the 16th September. The exhibition and open evening are at Thomas Tosh, The Old Parish Hall, 19 East Morton Street, Thornhill. DG3 5LZ. Tel: 01848 331 553. Thomas Tosh - 01848 331 553. http://www.thomastosh.com/
